Are Hair Extensions Bad for Your Hair? Let's Talk.

by Julia Willenbring 13 Feb 2025

Short answer: No, hair extensions are not inherently bad for your hair—but they can absolutely cause damage if you're not mindful about installation and maintenance.

Like any instant gratification beauty hack that promises to fulfill your deepest wishes (in this case, lusciously captivating hair that makes you feel undeniably desirable), extensions come with responsibilities—not just a price tag.

When investing in extensions, quality matters. There are numerous methods—sew-in wefts, tape-ins, I-tips, K-tips, and more—and not every method suits every person. I mean, think about it... If one method worked for all, we wouldn’t have so many options, now, would we? Research carefully and trust a reputable stylist to recommend the right method, use top-tier hair, and install it properly to optimize the health of your own hair in the process.

Once your extensions are properly applied, you’re halfway there. But don’t stop now.

Your stylist sets the stage, and, then, maintenance is your responsibility. If you sleep like a wild animal and neglect washing, drying, and brushing your hair regularly between move-ups, any potential damage isn’t the stylist’s fault, it's yours. I mean this with all due love and respect for you and the integrity of your hair when I say, If you plan to treat your designer hair like bargain-bin hair, do yourself a favor; don’t bother investing in extensions.

For optimal results, I strongly recommend regular professional blowouts. Weekly or bi-weekly visits ensure your stylist can deep clean, style, and check for any issues before they escalate. This investment keeps your hair looking fresh and healthy while saving you time and stress at home.

With the right approach, extensions can even promote hair growth, as many clients handle their natural hair more gently when wearing them.

Pro tips: Braid your hair before bed, switch to a silk pillowcase to reduce tangling and friction, and keep your hair clean and detangled...which, by the way, you should be doing anyway.

At the end of the day, extensions done right are worth it—and so are you.
