Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Brazilian Wax

by Julia Willenbring 07 Mar 2025

Thinking about getting your first Brazilian wax? You’re in good company...Many women have questions (and understandable nerves) before their first appointment. The good news? Brazilian waxing is a routine service for estheticians, and with the right preparation, it can be a smooth experience—pun intended😉.

Below, we’ll answer the most common questions about Brazilian waxing, from what to expect before, during, and after your appointment.

Before Your Appointment: Prep & Expectations

1. How long should my hair be?

For the best results, your hair should be at least ¼ inch long (about the length of a grain of rice). If you’ve been shaving, you’ll need to let your hair grow out for about 2-3 weeks before waxing.

As a professional note from experience, the shorter the hair, the less clean your first wax and potentially the more painful your experience might be because of how rooted the hairs still are. Three weeks to four weeks maximum (please do not go full Woodstock and show up with a 70s bush) will ensure optimal results--2 is definitely doable and fine for some people, but just be prepared if there are a few hairs left over

2. Does it hurt?

Let’s be real—yes, it can be uncomfortable, especially the first time. But do not fret, it does get easier subsequent visits if you do not shave in between appointments...and, no, that is not a con just to get you to try it again. The reason it becomes more tolerable is not only your increased pain threshold, but namely because you will have all your hairs on the same growth cycle, which basically means that when you time it well, they should all be loosening up in their cycle and ideally will not be hanging on for dear life anymore when you go to rip them out. The same cannot be said for your first one, unfortunately. The natural thinning that occurs over time is a bonus, too.

If you're worried about sensitivity, do your research on your esthetician because, well, some care about being gentle and others are a little more "wham bam, thank you ma'am" about it. However you end up finding your person, here's one of my secret pain tricks you can use even if they don't tell you:

Before they pull the strip, take a deep breath in, and as they pull the strip, simultaneously breath out; the more sensitive the section, the more forcefully you want to breath out while they pull the strip. The worst thing you can do is hold your breath. Trust me. Once upon a time a client shared with me the science behind why my tactic worked with the nervous system, but for the life of me I can't remember how, I just know that it helps tremendously. Breathe out. I mean it.

3. What should I do to prepare?

  • Exfoliate the area gently 24 hours before to help prevent ingrown hairs. A loofa will do the job, or you can use a gentle scrub to be more intentional, just don't overdo it before (or after).
  • Avoid caffeine or alcohol beforehand, as they can make your skin more sensitive.
  • If you’re really nervous, you can apply a numbing cream (just check with your esthetician first).*While numbing is technically an option, in my 12 year experience, I've had people come in baked, but not numbed... It will be okay, I promise. Your imagination is usually worse than reality.

4. What exactly is included in a Brazilian wax?

A Brazilian wax removes the hair from the front, the labia, and the back (between the cheeks). Some women opt to leave a small strip or triangle in the front, but that part is personal preference and totally up to you.

5. Can I get waxed on my period?

Yes! However, your skin might be more sensitive, so expect the process to feel a little more intense. If you’re on your period, wear a tampon and let your esthetician know beforehand.

Full transparency, we really couldn't care less if you're on your period, but for your own sake, maybe don't do it your first one.

6. Will I be embarrassed?

There is no reason to be! Waxing professionals perform Brazilian waxes every day and are trained to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Trust us—your esthetician is focused on the service, not judging your body. We are like doctors in the sense that this is just another inconsequential part of our day.

During Your Wax: What to Expect

7. How long does a Brazilian wax take?

On average, the process takes 15-30 minutes. The first time may take a little longer since your esthetician will guide you through the process and make every effort to ensure your comfort to the best of their ability.

8. What position will I be in?

You’ll usually lie on your back with your legs bent outward, one at a time. Your esthetician may ask you to move into different positions to get all the hair, including turning onto your side or pulling your knees toward your chest.

9. Is it normal to bleed?

If it’s your first time, you might notice slight pinpoint bleeding, especially if you have coarse hair. This is completely normal and usually stops quickly.

After Your Wax: Aftercare & Results

10. How long will my Brazilian wax last?

You can expect to stay smooth for about 3-4 weeks before noticeable regrowth begins. With consistent waxing, hair tends to grow back finer and sparser over time. That said, in some circumstances, don't be surprised if you feel like your hair grew back slightly faster between the first and second waxes just because you are still trying to get all the hair on the same cycle. It will level out your next visit and you should expect better results, longer.

11. What should I avoid after my wax?

For at least 24 hours, avoid:

  • Hot showers, baths, and saunas
  • Tight clothing that can cause friction
  • Intense workouts (sweat can cause irritation)
  • Touching or scratching the area
  • Direct sun exposure or tanning

12. Will I get ingrown hairs?

Ingrown hairs can happen, but you can minimize them by exfoliating 2 times a week and using my favorite post-wax product, Tend Skin. Ingrowns should improve with wax (typically), not get worse. If you get bad ingrowns from wax, pay attention to see how large the sections are being taken at a single time. Sometimes sections that are too large and neglect changing hair direction patterns can be the culprit.

13. Can I have sex after waxing?

It’s best to wait at least 24 hours to avoid irritation. Your skin is more sensitive after waxing, so give it a little time to calm down.

14. What if I don’t like it?

If you decide that a Brazilian wax isn’t for you, that’s totally okay! You can always let the hair grow back and try another hair removal method. But many women find that once they start waxing, they never go back to shaving!

Final Thoughts: Should You Try a Brazilian Wax?

If you’re considering a Brazilian wax, knowing what to expect can help ease any nerves. While the first time might feel a little intimidating, the results—smooth, long-lasting, and low-maintenance skin—are worth it!

Thinking about booking your first Brazilian wax? Schedule an appointment with a professional esthetician who can guide you through the process and make it as comfortable as possible. You got this!
