Slow & Steady Skin Wins: How I Build Routines That Actually Stick

by Julia Willenbring 01 Sep 2025

If I had a dollar for every time someone told me, “I bought all these products and… they’re just sitting on my bathroom shelf”—well, I'd probably own a private jet by now.

Here’s the thing: I don’t believe in turning your skincare routine into an Olympic event. You don’t need seven serums, three masks, and a synchronized double cleanse every night to get great skin. In fact, sometimes less is more—especially when we’re talking about compliance (a.k.a., the likelihood you’ll actually do it).

If your current routine is only two products once a day, I’m not going to hand you a 10-step Korean skincare lineup and wish you luck. That’s like asking someone who takes the elevator to run a marathon tomorrow—it’s just not happening. Instead, I like to work with what you’re realistically going to stick to. We can always build up from there.

I’m a big believer in habit stacking—adding small, achievable changes to your existing routine so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. If you already cleanse once a day, maybe we add an exfoliating cleanser that you swap in every other day. Now you have two cleansers, same single step, twice the benefits. One is gentle, one is a bit more active, and your skin gets variety without more work. It’s skincare multitasking at its finest.

I rarely overhaul a client’s entire routine in one go. If you’ve got problematic or sensitive skin, changing everything at once is like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks—you have no idea which product is helping and which one is making you break out. We change a couple of things at a time, watch how your skin responds, and build from there.

The best part? When your cleansing, toning, and exfoliating game is on point, you often need less moisturizer and fewer expensive serums because your skin is already balanced—not stripped, stressed, and begging for help. That’s a win for your skin and your wallet.

So next time you’re tempted to buy the latest miracle cream, ask yourself: “Am I actually going to use this every day?” If the answer is “probably not,” let’s take a step back, slow our roll, and create a routine you’ll actually stick to. Because slow and steady doesn’t just win the race—it also wins the glow.
